For a town that spent the last five years arguing about whether it was rural or suburban, Northlake quietly answered the question this spring. The center of gravity moved east of I-35W. If you live in Pecan Square, Harvest, Canyon Falls, or The Ridge, your Saturday is about to look different than it did last June, and the change has very little to do with what the home builders did and almost everything to do with one parking lot off Highway 114.
The short version is this. Three openings, one already live and two arriving inside the next few weeks, mean a Northlake family can spend a full summer Saturday without crossing 35W. That wasn't true twelve months ago. Here is what changed and how the rest of the calendar is reshuffling around it.
The anchor everyone keeps driving past
The Children's Health StarCenter Multisport Northlake opened at 13850 Chadwick Parkway on March 31, 2026. The number that matters for residents is not the price tag. It is the square footage and the floor plan. The 225,000-square-foot facility features two NHL regulation sheets of ice and eight basketball courts, which can be converted to 16 volleyball courts. Northlake's StarCenter is the 11th StarCenter location in the DFW Metroplex, joining existing facilities in Euless, Farmers Branch, Frisco, Lewisville, Mansfield, McKinney, Plano, Richardson and Valley Ranch.
Translate that to a parent's calendar. The closest comparable rink before this spring was in Farmers Branch. For a Pecan Square family with a kid in Learn-to-Skate, that was a forty-five minute drive each way on a weeknight. Now it is six minutes. The named rinks and gyms aren't just sentimental either. The other rink is named after Joe Nieuwendyk, a former Dallas Stars player and general manager. One of the two basketball/volleyball gyms was named after former Argyle basketball star Rhyle McKinney. Despite being born legally deaf, she played on the Argyle varsity basketball team all four years of high school. She made it to the state title all four years and won three state championships. McKinney went on to play collegiately at SMU and Texas Tech. The other gym was dubbed Flickinger Gym, in honor of former Byron Nelson volleyball star Paige Flickinger. The building is signaling, on the wall, who it expects to fill the bleachers.
June is when the rest of it turns on
The rinks and courts are running. The piece that actually changes a Northlake Saturday is the storefront attached to it. Additional features include eight pickleball courts set to open soon alongside a Shark Club Sports Bar & Grill scheduled for June launch; Shark Club will also operate an onsite concession stand with coffee bar offerings.
This is the part worth slowing down on. Most sports complexes farm out the food to a local operator with a deep fryer and a price markup. Shark Club is not that. Shark Club is from Dallas Stars owner Tom Gaglardi and first opened in Vancouver, Canada in 1993. Gaglardi also co-owns both the restaurant chain Moxies and the new Craft Restaurant and Beer Market coming to Dallas' Preston Center. The menu reads broader than a tournament-day burger run. Shark Club's menu features globally-inspired dishes such as shishito peppers and butter chicken, alongside classic American bar food such as chicken wings and burgers. Other dishes include bowls, salads, pot roast, and weekend brunch featuring chicken & waffles and breakfast tacos.
If you have lived in Northlake long enough to remember when Sunday brunch meant driving to Roanoke or Southlake, take a second to absorb that last sentence.
Northlake Commons is filling in the gap nobody talks about
The east-side story tends to overshadow what is happening on FM 407. It shouldn't. The Commons has been a slow build, and one piece of it is closing this summer in a way that matters more than the headline suggests. Crave Cookies is currently under construction on a 1,500 square-foot shop at 101 Plaza Pl, Suite 100 in Northlake, taking the former Vanellies Bake Shop site at Northlake Commons Shopping Center, slated to open in Spring 2026.
For residents who watched Vanellies close, this is the question answered. The space is not sitting dark. It is converting from a single-owner bakery into a chain operator with the volume to actually keep the lights on at a strip-center rent. That is a different bet about how many people are actually walking past that door on a Saturday morning, and it suggests the leasing side of the Commons has more confidence in foot traffic than it did two years ago.
A few hundred yards away, the corner at FM 407 and I-35W is doing its own filling-in. The new shopping spot is already home to McDonald's, Chick-fil-A and Chase Bank, and a Tom Thumb grocery store is under construction with plans to open in Spring 2026. A grocery anchor is the difference between driving twelve miles to Argyle for a gallon of milk and walking out the door. There is a Kroger Marketplace 9 miles from Pecan Square and Tom Thumb and Whole Foods are 12 miles away. Those distances are about to compress for anyone in Harvest or Pecan Square.
Saturdays at Pecan Square are still the social engine
The new construction east of 35W gets the photographer. The actual community rhythm has been at Pecan Square for years and is not slowing down. Pecan Square's Lifestyle Manager hosts 300+ events per year from teen events and family movie nights to quilting classes and concerts. What is worth marking on your calendar this summer:
- The Saturday Farmers' Market in the Pecan District, with local produce, handmade goods, and live music
- The Summer Splash pool and water-games event at the resort-style pools
- Food-truck nights at the Town Square, which double as the neighborhood's de facto block party
- Sports Day programming at the new Starling Park, which opened during Spring Break with sand volleyball, putt-putt, and shaded hammocks
If you live in Canyon Falls or The Ridge and have never walked over to a Pecan Square food-truck night, this is the summer to fix that. The Town Square is home to multiple award-winning amenities including a game room, two swimming pools, a fitness center, a post & parcel with Amazon Hub lockers, a co-working space and a 22,000-square-foot multi-purpose event space. The events are visible from the street. Nobody is checking residency at the curb.
A Saturday that wasn't possible last June
Here is the practical test. Drop your eight-year-old at a Saturday morning Learn-to-Skate session on the Nieuwendyk Rink. Walk through to the Shark Club coffee bar for the kind of breakfast you used to drive to Westlake for. Pick up at noon, swing through Northlake Commons for a dozen Crave cookies because somebody's birthday party is on Sunday, hit the Tom Thumb at Harvest Town Center for the rest of the grocery list, and be home in time for an afternoon at the Pecan Square pool. That loop did not exist in June 2025. Every single piece of it either opened in the last ten weeks or opens in the next four.
The other thing worth noting is the older Northlake restaurants benefit, not lose. Marty B's on FM 407 has been the default family BBQ stop for years, and a fuller commercial corridor pulls more weeknight traffic past it, not less. Amano Italian Bistro, which Pecan Square residents have been quietly recommending to neighbors on Nextdoor for a while, sits inside the same trade area that is about to get a lot more crowded. The new operators are not replacing the old ones. They are extending the hours of the day when there is something to do in Northlake without getting on the highway.
What this means if you already own here
If you are not selling, the question is not whether your house went up in value this quarter. The question is whether your daily life got better, and the honest answer is yes. With an estimated 1.3 million annual visitors, the complex is expected to drive sports tourism, support nearby hotels and restaurants, and anchor future mixed-use development in the area. For local families, however, the impact is more immediate. The StarCenter brings elite-level ice and court sports closer to home, reducing travel time for practices, leagues, and tournaments.
The second-order effect is the one to watch. Portions of the complex — including its restaurant and adjacent mixed-use development—are still coming online in phases throughout 2026. In other words, while the core rinks and courts are up and running, the broader vision is far from complete. Translation. What you are seeing this June is the opening sequence, not the finished town. Northlake Crossing at the intersection of Gibbs and Robson Ranch Roads in The Ridge and Pecan Plaza at the intersection of Gibbs Road and FM 407 in Pecan Square are currently under construction. Pecan Plaza in particular is going to change what a Pecan Square evening looks like the same way Northlake Commons changed the Harvest one. Watch that corner.
For now, the practical advice is simple. Take a Saturday in late June, after Shark Club opens and the pickleball courts are striped, and walk the loop. You will recognize the town. You will also notice it has stopped feeling like a place you drive through to get somewhere else.
