Northlake's Fall Rhythm Is Shifting Around FM 407 and Gibbs Road
Floyd Barksdale Middle School is open, Jack's Junction arrives this fall, and Pecan Plaza is still under construction.
If you've lived in Northlake for more than a season, you already know the town's center of gravity for a normal Saturday. For years it sat at the I-35W and 114 corner, where the Speedway, the Buc-ee's exit, and the newer Chadwick Parkway build-out pulled most of the weekend traffic east.
Over the next few months, that starts to change. Three things are reshaping the routine around FM 407 and Gibbs Road: a new middle school that's now open, a new park arriving this fall, and a retail corner that's still under construction.

The August bell that rerouted the morning
Floyd Barksdale Middle School opened for the 2026–2027 school year on a site next to Pecan Square, and the practical effect is bigger than the ribbon-cutting suggests. For four years, Northlake middle schoolers in Northwest ISD have been bused to Gene Pike Middle School or Medlin, both a real drive from the FM 407 corridor. The new campus sits inside the Pecan Square neighborhood footprint, which means the morning route for hundreds of families is now a right-turn instead of a fifteen-minute commute.
The school will be known as the Broncos, colors gold and white with dark gray, and the naming ceremony back in January brought students from Johnie Daniel, Justin, and Lance Thompson elementary schools together with members of the Barksdale family. Michelle Jennings was named inaugural principal in April, taking over campus planning from Tricia Lutkenhaus, who had led the launch since spring 2025. Attendance boundaries were approved by the NISD board back in January 2026, so if you haven't checked which campus your address feeds into for the year, that's the file to open first.
Where the kids go at 3:30
The park map inside Pecan Square gets a new pin this fall too. Jack's Junction, slated for a Fall 2026 opening according to Hillwood's community blog, is being built around specialized climbing structures and balance play rather than the standard swing-and-slide setup. It joins a park network that already includes:
- Cottontail Park, with a climbing wall and open green
- Cobbler Park, the neighborhood bench-and-picnic hangout
- Starling Park, completed in 2025, with sand volleyball, basketball, hammocks, and putting greens
- Pioneer Park, next to The Arena, with a pizza oven and fire pit
- Fielding Park, the pocket play area for younger kids
If you have a fifth-grader now, that's the practical rotation for after-school and weekend afternoons over the next school year. Hillwood has also signaled three future ponds connected by walking paths, though those don't have a firm date.
Pecan Plaza is taking shape, but it isn't open yet
The retail corner at FM 407 and Cleveland-Gibbs Road, developed by Office Equity Solutions for Hillwood, is still under construction. CVS Pharmacy and Little Caesars are the two confirmed tenants, and neither has announced an opening date. Additional tenants haven't been announced publicly.
For eastern Pecan Square, Harvest, and Canyon Falls households, CVS will be the closest pharmacy once it opens. Today the nearest CVS is the Argyle location about four miles away, and the pharmacy at Tom Thumb in Harvest Town Center, open since March, is another option for many of these households.

None of these is individually dramatic. Together they start to compress a full day of family logistics into a tighter geography, and that's the piece the map hides until you live it.
The east side isn't going quiet
The Chadwick Parkway anchor is still very much in play. The Children's Health StarCenter Multisport Northlake opened at 13850 Chadwick Parkway on March 31, and the fall calendar there is where the town's competitive youth sports scene has quietly consolidated. The 225,000-square-foot facility runs two NHL-regulation rinks, one named for former Dallas Stars center Joe Nieuwendyk and the other for Mayor Brian Montini. The two gyms carry the names of Argyle basketball alum Rhyle McKinney and former Byron Nelson volleyball star Paige Flickinger, both nods to local athletes rather than franchise branding.
The facility is home to TAV Alliance, the elite branch of Texas Advantage Volleyball, and hosts Dallas Stars Metro Hockey League play from ages four through eighteen alongside adult divisions. The Shark Club Sports Bar and Grill inside the building, according to Dallas Stars reporting, expected to open its own doors in June, adds a Friday-night option that didn't exist for Northlake families a year ago. For a household with one kid in Bronco practice at Barksdale and another in a Saturday volleyball tournament, the town now sustains a full day inside its own borders.
What ties it together
Barksdale sits on the Pecan Square east edge. Jack's Junction is inside the community. Pecan Plaza, once it opens, will anchor the FM 407 and Gibbs intersection. Together they make the FM 407 corridor the center of the family routine in a way it wasn't a few years ago. Northlake's Metroport Chamber page still describes the town as balancing thirteen square miles of preserved rural land against its master-planned communities, and that framing holds. What's shifting is which corner of that map you spend your Tuesdays and Saturdays on.
If you're already in Pecan Square, Harvest, or Canyon Falls, the concrete change is that the fall calendar now packs into a smaller footprint. If you're farther west toward The Ridge or the older parts of town, the Cleveland-Gibbs Road extension makes that footprint reachable in a way it wasn't two years ago. And if you're one of the eight registered homeowners associations that make up the majority of Northlake's residential base, the takeaway is simpler: the errands, the school pickup, and the Saturday routine you used to spread across three exits will keep drawing together as the corridor fills in.
That's the story worth telling neighbors over the fence this fall. The buildings are new, the rhythm is new, and the town underneath both is still the same quiet, family-first Northlake that made most of us pick it in the first place.
